Morgan Schneiderlin – Where did it all go wrong at Manchester United?

Wednesday 18th January 2017
United fans quickly christened the pair, the ‘Schmidfield'. But almost exactly 18 months later Schneiderlin's United career is over, a move to Everton completed on January 12th, 2017, almost exactly 18 months to the day after he joined United. Never fully trusted by Louis van Gaal and rarely used by Jose Mourinho, just where did it go wrong for a player who generated so much excitement when he first joined?

Known as a box to box midfielder during his time at Southampton, it was expected that Schneiderlin's passing, energy and dynamism would add a new dimension to the Manchester United midfield. The early signs were promising, United didn't lose any of the first 20 games that Schneiderlin started, and didn't concede a goal at home in any of his first 10 starts.  But even at this early stage, things weren't going smoothly. Schneiderlin found himself constantly in and out of Louis van Gaal's team, with the Dutchman often preferring Marouane Fellaini.

A dynamic performance in a 3-0 win at Goodison Park, which included Schneiderlin's first goal for the club, looked to the be the marker for a run in the side, but it never materialised. Schneiderlin was named amongst the substitutes for the FA Cup final but failed to get on, something that characterised his first season at the club. Many United viewers were moved to ask a simple question. What does Morgan Schneiderlin do?  He never quite seemed to really grab a game and dictate it and often seemed overwhelmed by being a Manchester United player

In the summer of 2016 Louis van Gaal departed Old Trafford to be replaced by Jose Mourinho and optimism for Schneiderlin was renewed. Mourinho promised to bring a different style to United and many hoped that Schneiderlin might be the dynamic, energetic midfielder to be at the heart of it. Instead, it was Ander Herrera who made that role his own. Schneiderlin failed to start a single league game under Mourinho and was limited to just two starts in the EFL Cup and one in the Europa league. So, it came as no surprise when, in December 2016, Mourinho announced that Schneiderlin had asked for a transfer.

A reunion with former boss Ronald Koeman could be the spark that reignites the career of a player who still has his prime years ahead of him but those of us who were excited by his initial arrival can't help but feel a twinge of disappointment and wonder just how it all ended this way. Morgan Schneiderlin's Manchester United career is less of one that went downhill and more of one that never really got started. I, for one, wish him the very best at Everton.

I love the Premier League and I am a season ticket holder at Manchester United. However, I do follow my local club Bury FC as much as possible. I'm a lover of all things related to football, especially like the odd game of FIFA and more than the odd game of Football Manager. If you don't find me talking about actual football you will usually find me talking about Fantasy Football. I'm a self-confessed addict.

I'm definitely a football addict.
